6. "RED" J. C.2 Gentle (Thomas1 Franklin) (#486) was born in Gentle's Cove, Limrock, Alabama 12 24 1915. "RED" died 09 30 1997 in Wallowa, Oregon, at 82 years of age.
He married Millicent Evelyn Bell in Detroit, 02 01 1947. (Millicent Evelyn Bell is #225.) Millicent was born in Det. 05 01 1923. Millicent is the daughter of William Gilbert Bell and Millicent Emily Janes. At 24 years of age Millicent became the mother of Gregory Allen Gentle 12 12 1947. At 28 years of age Millicent became the mother of Gary Jay Gentle 10 21 1951. At 30 years of age Millicent became the mother of Cathy Arlene Gentle 11 04 1953. At 33 years of age Millicent became the mother of John Carson Gentle 07 18 1956. At 35 years of age Millicent became the mother of William Thomas Gentle 08 14 1958.
At 32 years of age "RED" became the father of Gregory Allen Gentle 12 12 1947. At 36 years of age "RED" became the father of Gary Jay Gentle 10 21 1951. At 38 years of age "RED" became the father of Cathy Arlene Gentle 11 04 1953. At 41 years of age "RED" became the father of John Carson Gentle 07 18 1956. At 43 years of age "RED" became the father of William Thomas Gentle 08 14 1958. His funeral was held in Wallowa Cemetery, Wallowa, Oregon, 10 04 1997. J. C. Gentle Enlisted in the U. S. Navy on 03 07 1934. Upon completion of recruit training, he served onboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga until his discharge in 1938. With the onset of the war in Europe in 1939, he reenlisted and served onboard the fleet minesweeper USS Gamble. The USS Gamble was one of the ships to survive the attack on Pearl Harbor and was credited with shooting down one Japanese Zero during that famous battle. Chief Signalman Gentle saw action Samoa, Fiji and Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal, Lingayen Gulf, Phillippines Iwo Jima. During these campaigns the USS Gamble was credited with sinking one Japanese submarine and at least three enemy destroyers. As the leading Chief Signalman onboard the USS Taluga, he served in the Korean War zone in support of Task Force 77. Chief Gentle completed his naval career at the U. S. Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, Md., as a Quatermaster School instructor specializing in signaling and navigation. Gentle was a long time resident of Wallowa and was know throughout the country and eastern Oregon as an accomplished old-time fiddler. Coming from a musical family, he began playing the fiddle in 1937. Although basically self taught, "J" "C" credited his good friend and world renowned fiddler Chubby Wise with teaching him some of the finer points of old time fiddling. "J" "C" participated in numerous old time fiddling contests throughout the inland northwest, including the national event at Weiser, Idaho where he also served as a judge. His love for fiddle music inspired him to pursue the craft of violin making beginning in 1947. Over the next 50 years "J" "C" handcrafted 24 violins. He coached little league baseball in 67 and 68, and also enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. "J" "C" was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
